Scénu z bitevního pole připomínala situace na nádraží londýnského předměstí Harrow, kde se před 70 lety, 8. října 1952, srazily tři vlaky plné lidí. Zahynulo 112 lidí a 340 jich utrpělo zranění. Událost se stala druhým nejhorším neštěstím v dějinách britské železnice.
Rozbřesk osudného 8. října 1952 přinesl typické britské podzimní počasí – místy mlha, kterou tu a tam proráželo slunce. V 7.31 místního času stál na nástupišti ve stanici Harrow a Wealdstone osobní vlak a nastupovali do něj cestující, jedoucí do města do práce. Ale v 8.19 cesta pro mnohé z nich navždy skončila.
Noční expres z Perthu do Eustonu, jedoucí rychlostí téměř 100 kilometrů v hodině, minul z nikdy neobjasněných důvodů v 8.15 dva výstražné signály, kvůli kterým měl zastavit. Ale řidič soupravy s názvem City of Glasgow, jež se skládala z lokomotivy a 11 vagónů, buď signály v mlze přehlédl, nebo nedával pozor.
Když rychlík přijel na dohled osobnímu vlaku, začal brzdit, ale jel příliš rychle, a tak narazil zezadu do jeho vagónů. A po několika vteřinách narazil do této spoušti ještě další expres. Všech šest tratí nádraží v Harrow zasypaly trosky vlaků.
»Všechno se stalo ve vteřině. Ozvala se strašlivá rána a zasypal mě příval skleněných střepů a úlomků,« líčil John Bannister, který nehodu přežil. »Na chvíli jsem ztratil vědomí a když jsem přišel k sobě, ležel jsem na kolejích a na mě hromada trosek. Podařilo se mi z nich vymanit a vyhoupl jsem se na perón.«
Ve třech vlacích bylo celkem tisíc cestujících, nejvíce jich zahynulo na zadním konci osobního vlaku a v předních vagónech obou rychlíků.
Celkem zemřelo 108 cestujících a čtyři železničáři. Oběti byly i mezi čekajícími na perónech, neboť síla srážky rozmetala kusy vlaků po nástupištích a smetla každého, kdo se tam nacházel. Jiní zahynuli na pěší lávce nad nádražím, kterou prorazila hromada vagónů, jež dosáhla výše devíti metrů.
Při záchranných pracích bylo nutno vagóny rozřezat, aby se hasiči a policisté dostali ke zraněným uvnitř. A také museli odříznout prostřední část lávky pro pěší.
Královna Alžběta II. a tehdejší premiér Winston Churchill vyjádřili hlubokou soustrast příbuzným obětí nehody.
Nehoda v Harrow se stala nejhorším neštěstím v mírových dobách v britské historii a v počtu mrtvých ji předstihla pouze nehoda ve skotském Quintinshillu v roce 1915, kde při srážce rovněž tří vlaků zahynulo 227 lidí, když oheň zachvátil jeden z dřevěných vlaků vezoucí vojáky.
